Hello everyone! It's Charlie, excited to welcome you to my blog and start a new series about my latest book, "Jonah: Following God's Call When You'd Rather Run Away". This isn't just a Bible story; it's a journey, and I invite you to explore Jonah's story and its relevance today. The journey began in summer 2022 during my church sermons on Jonah, highlighting that his story is our story—full of truths that resonate with everyone. I retold these messages at a high school retreat, and the Holy Spirit moved us again.
We discussed how Jonah received "multiple mulligans"—do-overs from God, who is about second chances. Like Jonah, I hesitated to answer God's call to ministry but finally trusted Him, experiencing His love and support. A powerful lesson is that "it is never too late to pray," even from the belly of the fish, as Jonah did—reminding us that no matter our circumstances, God listens.
But God's love isn't just for us. Jonah, chosen by God, hated the Ninevites—brutal enemies of his people—and fled because he knew God was "slow to anger and abounding in love." He was afraid they'd be forgiven. We often want God's grace for ourselves but hesitate when extended to others. God's love is unconditional and higher than our ways.
As I preached, I felt called to share these truths beyond the pulpit. It took me 30 years to fully embrace my calling to be a pastor, relating to Jonah's delayed obedience. That's how "Jonah" was born, part of my "Dare to Believe" series, aiming to guide and inspire you to step into God's plan.
Through Jonah's adventures, we learn to live out faith in four dimensions: upward, inward, outward, and forward. This framework has transformed my understanding of identity and calling, and I hope it will for you too.
I've poured my heart into this book to make Jonah's story accessible and life-changing. It's humorous, relatable, and practical, encouraging you to start where you are and live meaningfully.
Remember, God is always working in lives around us. We join Him where He is already at work. Who is your Nineveh—who or what is God calling you to? Join me on this journey! In coming weeks, I’ll share insights, excerpts, and reflections. Subscribe to my blog, check out the "Charlie Grimes Podcast," and discover how God's plan surpasses our fears and failures!
With much love and gratitude,
Charlie
